As Schuylkill County prepares to go green on Friday, state parks are beginning to open facilities and programs for the summer.

Tuscarora and Locust Lake State Parks have remained open during the pandemic for passive recreation, but playgrounds, pavilions, swimming beaches and other recreational activities were shut down to the public.

"We've been following a measured approach to reopening the park and its' facilities, so we've been following guidelines from the CDC and the governor's reopening plan," says Park Manager Nicholas Sulzer. "As the phases are moved to yellow and then this Friday we'll be moving to green, we've opened up more and more facilities as we've gone along.”

Swimming beaches opened 2 weeks ago and are at a limited capacity of 600 people, that’s half of the maximum number. Overnight facilities are back open. Locust Lake has a 280 site family campground and Tuscarora has cottages and yurts available for overnight trips.

Playgrounds open Friday, but pavilions and other facilities that hold more than 25 people will remain closed until further notice.
