HANOVER TWP., Pa. (WLVT) - Going to the grocery store for many people is a weekly or monthly routine for many people, but for parents who have special needs children, that task can be a bit more challenging.
Because of this, Wegmans released what the Firefly “GoTo Shop” cart for parents of kids who have limited mobility and cannot fit into traditional shopping carts. “Where we filled in the gap was some special needs children are too big to sit on top of your traditional shopping cart and then too small to fit in Caroline’s Cart,” said Wegmans Service Manager, Collin Spirk.
Caroline’s Cart is another type of shopping cart for kids with special needs who are more than 77 pounds or older than eight years of age. The GoTo Shop carts are designed for kids between the ages of two and eight, who are less than 77 pounds.
Spirk said a customer in Buffalo, New York brought the GoTo Shop carts to Wegmans’ attention because her daughter has a neurological movement disorder, preventing her from standing up or walking. They came to stores about two weeks ago, and they are now at all 99 locations, according to Spirk.
“Most parents with special needs children have to plan their day around when someone is available to watch their child for them,” said Spirk. “But now - between Caroline’s Cart, our go-to cart, and our regular cart - we can provide them with the ease of being able to shop whenever they want.”
If you shop at Wegmans and need one of the special carts, Spirk said to give the store a call so they can bring it directly to your car.
