BETHLEHEM, Pa. (WLVT) - Moravian College confirmed five cases of mumps, which is considered an outbreak by the CDC.

“When students first presented symptoms of the mumps, we contacted the Bethlehem Health Bureau,” said Michael Corr with Moravian College. “We’ve been in daily contact with them, as far as how to communicate with students, and how to treat students.”

According to the health bureau’s nursing director, Sue Madeja, it is believed that the virus may have spread through one of Moravian’s sports teams. In response, the health bureau held vaccinations at the school Tuesday afternoon for people who’ve had close contact with any of the confirmed cases.

Madeja said they are encouraging people to get the MMR booster shot, to increase the vaccine’s effectiveness. “Protection with the vaccine is going to help reduce the risk of complications, even if you do get sick with the mumps,” said Madeja.

“We’re just encouraging our students to practice safe and healthy habits,” said Corr. Wash your hands. Cover your mouth when you cough. Don’t share drinks. Don’t share food while the outbreak is underway.”

For some students on campus, the mumps conversation is far from comforting. “It’s just a little scary,” said freshman Mackenzie Silvius. “I’m kinda worried that it’s going to start spreading more than it already is.

Moravian and the Bethlehem Health Bureau said they will continue to monitor the situation and keep close communication with students, to make sure everyone can be as safe as possible.
