STROUDSBURG, Pa. (WLVT) - Community organizations in Stroudsburg came together this Christmas to give gifts to 37 foster children.

“Having other individuals helping and giving back is such a blessing,” said Karen James, Foster Care Clinical Supervisor at Merakey Pocono Mountains. Merakey offers several types of family services, and James said the kids were excited to find out people who didn’t know them wanted to get them gifts.

The organizations who pitched in were the Kaya Initiative, the Greater Pocono Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., the Greater Pocono Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., and the East Pocono Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

“At the end of the day, we are all here for the same reason,” said Kaya Initiative President, Tameko Patterson. “We live in the same community, so we should all do everything we can to work together to support the community we live in and support each other.”

Working in foster care, James said it’s also important for kids to have passionate and understanding foster parents. “Because children are being placed in foster care on a daily basis, we are always in need of new homes.”
