ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WLVT) - Anish Pallod's family volunteers regularly at the Allentown Rescue Mission.

But the 12-year-old seventh-grader wanted to do more.

Anish, who attends Springhouse Middle School in the Parkland School District, used his skills as a chess champion to raise money for the shelter.

He organized and led an online chess camp for kids during the pandemic. He prepared a syllabus, schedule and memberships for students -- and raised $600.

Anish, a three-time Pennsylvania chess champ in his age group, used Zoom to connect participants.

Rescue mission leaders were astonished by his initiative and delighted with the end results.

"I find that teaching others and helping the community is a great way to give back," he said. He hopes to lead more projects and inspire people to volunteer in their communities.
