ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WLVT) - Turkey farming is no small operation in the Greater Lehigh Valley. Collectively, Pennsylvania's Jaindl Farms and Koch's Turkey produce around 1.8 million turkeys a year.
But Thanksgiving celebrations may be getting smaller by the hour.
On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommended Americans celebrate the holiday "at home with the people you live with." And with more families planning to celebrate solo this year, the demand for turkey has increased.
"Our sales are up about- overall- 8% over last year and (in) all size categories," said David Jaindl, owner of Jaindl Farms in Orefield, Lehigh County.
In its retail store, Koch's Turkey has seen a lot of demand for product.
"People are just looking for more product than usual because less households are coming together," said Brock Stein, president of Koch's Turkey near Tamaqua, Schuylkill County.
