ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WLVT) - The Cedar Creek behind the Cedar Beach Pool in Allentown has flooded for many years, but now officials are working to put a stop to that.

A concrete pedestrian bridge that crossed over the creek held a lot of water and was responsible for most of the park’s recent flooding. Parks Superintendent, Rick Holtzman, said after removing that bridge in May, they haven’t seen any issues. Back in 2018, the Cedar Beach Pool had to be closed twice, because of this problem.

Luis Feliciano grew up near the park and brings his son there to play. He said flooding is not a new conversation at the park. “Seems like that’s been an issue for years,” said Feliciano. “I’ve actually seen the park flood quite a few times.”

The first phase of this project included removing the bridge, and crews are now working to restore the streambank in the creek to its natural environment. The city will also plant trees near the creek as well. This part of the process is about $6,000. Phase two will involve work being done to the asphalt areas of the park near the creek, but the date hasn’t been set for when this will start.
