EMMAUS, PA - “It smells good, it feels good so hopefully it will provide some sort of relief.”
You’ll find it in vapes, oils, soaps and lotions. But what is CBD? And is the craze credible?
Local Jen Shubzda says, “It is appealing because it is a natural product and it’s something that is topical. I’m too young to have a hip replacement and I’m a runner and a boot camp trainer at soldier fit so I’m constantly moving, I’m constantly active and I don’t want this to deteriorate to the point where I can’t move so this might be a solution to help me out in the future.”
CBD is short for cannabidiol. It’s the non-psychoactive chemical compound in hemp and marijuana. But while marijuana remains illegal under federal law, CBD is more widely available and legal across US States. It’s best known for promoting relaxation and is experiencing an upswing of embracement in the health and beauty world.
Unlike marijuana, CBD products won’t get you high, but proponents say it will help you relax. At Your CBD Store in Emmaus, it's in dozens of products; all in the name of relaxation, the natural way.
Owners of Your CBD Store on Main Street in Emmaus, Jonathan and Jeffrey Valera say, they want to give an alternative solution for patients looking for safe, non-addictive treatment for pain, anxiety, depression, inflammation and more and are gearing their products towards older patrons. “We have bath bombs, we have Chapstick, we have collagen cream. We have our beauty ageless cream which is a daytime and a nighttime serum and that’s just some of the products we offer,” explains Jonathan.
While Your CBD Store in Emmaus is one of only a handful of others selling CBD in the Lehigh valley, bigger pharmacy chains like CVS have announced they too will begin selling hemp-derived CBD products in hundreds of their stores across 8 states as an alternative source of relief.
But with little research on CBD, not too much is known about its potential side effects. In epilepsy research, CBD changed the way the body processed other drugs; suggesting the chemical compound could interact with other medications. And with CBD’s popularity rising, U.S. regulators announced this month that they are exploring ways the marijuana extract could be used legally in foods, dietary supplements and cosmetics.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it will hold a public meeting at the end of May to gather more information on the science, manufacturing and sale of cannabis compounds like CBD. Meanwhile, more research on CBD is underway, with scientists looking into its effects on cancer, autism, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, even alcoholism and PTSD. But while those results will take years, the patrons here at Your CBD Store aren’t waiting.
