March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, but with the Coronavirus at the forefront of healthcare right now, this along with many other conditions, may be getting overlooked.

"I've been in pain since 2007 where I have had extreme lower back pain and I could barely get off the ground," says Beth Kovacs, an Endometriosis patient. "So, that's when my journey started. I've been in pain that long for three weeks out of the month since then."

Many walks have been canceled due to Coronavirus, but there’s a virtual EndoMarch on Saturday.

The Quakertown mom says she developed the pain after having a c-section, but it took years for a doctor to diagnose her. On average, it takes patients 7 to 10 years to be diagnosed, according to the Endometriosis Foundation of America.

"I was never diagnosed with Endometriosis. With any doctor visit, I don't have the normal cookie cutter symptoms like heavy periods or cramping. I have tottally different opposite pains," explains Kovacs. "So, they always said, 'Well since your pain went away, one week, a month, we don't think anything is wrong with you, it's fine.' The only way they would take me seriously is if I had pain consistently, you know, every day all day."

The MAYO Clinic defines the condition as an often painful disorder in which tissue similar to the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus-- the endometrium-- grows outside the uterus.

Kovacs was finally diagnosed and has since had surgery, but says the pain is still there. She cannot work and relies on heating pads to relieve some of her pain. The Bucks County woman is now an advocate for those with Endometriosis in Pennsylvania.

This weekend, walks to bring awareness to the condition called the Endo-March were supposed to take place, but the Coronavirus outbreak has postponed them.

However, a virtual walk was already scheduled and will go on as planned on Saturday, March 28th at 10AM.
